Kanboombo and Duolingo

Two different tools for learning a language.

Duolingo teaches you a language through a course. Kanboombo lets you read the books that last in it, a portion a day.
Here is how they differ, side by side. What this page says about Duolingo comes from Duolingo’s own pages, each one linked below.

What it is
Kanboombo
A reading calendar: the great books and the great calendars, a portion a day, in the language you know beside the one you’re learning.
Duolingo
A course app that calls itself “the most fun way to learn languages, chess, and more,” built on “quick, bite-sized lessons.” [1]
What you read
Kanboombo
Whole texts that have lasted, a portion at a time. Today: the Bible in the languages it was written in and in classic translations, and the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola.
Duolingo
Lessons written for each course. In its largest courses, like Spanish and French, also Stories (short dialogues for reading and listening) and DuoRadio episodes; for intermediate Spanish and French learners, the Duolingo Podcast. [2]
How a day works
Kanboombo
A lectionary or a program sets the day’s portion. A lectionary is a church’s calendar of readings; a program takes a great book a day at a time.
Duolingo
A path of units, each built around a communication goal, with lessons in speaking, writing, reading and listening. The course decides what you study next. [2]
What keeps you coming back
Kanboombo
Your calendar. Today’s portion sits on the same days as the rest of your life, so reading becomes part of the day you already keep.
Duolingo
Game-like features: XP, weekly leaderboards and leagues, a streak of days in a row, gems to spend, and reminders. [2]
What you review
Kanboombo
Only the words you chose. Tap a word as you read and it becomes a Recall card; spaced repetition brings it back just before you would forget it. Keeping cards needs a free account.
Duolingo
Personalized practice built into every unit, focused on what it’s time to review and on the mistakes you’ve made. [2]
Speaking and listening
Kanboombo
Not what Kanboombo is for. It is for reading: it shows how each word sounds, spelled out in Latin letters, but nothing listens to you speak.
Duolingo
Built into the lessons from the start. Duolingo Max, its top subscription, adds Video Call with Lily and roleplays with Duolingo’s characters for conversation practice. [2]

When to use which

They answer different questions.

Choose Duolingo when you want a course: a modern language from zero, speaking and listening practice, and a game that keeps you coming back.
Choose Kanboombo when you want to read something that matters in the language it was written in: a few verses a day, every word’s sound and meaning under it, and the words you keep brought back.
Use both when you want both. They ask for different minutes: a lesson on the train, the day’s reading with your coffee.
Questions

What you might be wondering

Is Kanboombo a replacement for Duolingo?

No. Duolingo is a course that teaches a language step by step. Kanboombo is a place to read the books that last in the language you are learning. You may want both.

Do I need to know Greek or Hebrew to start?

No. Every word shows how it sounds and what it means, and the verse in your own language sits right below it.

What does Kanboombo cost?

Reading is free, and so is signing up. A free account keeps your Recall cards and your place.

Which languages can I read in Kanboombo?

Today: Hebrew, Biblical Aramaic, English, Spanish, Arabic, Greek, Chinese, German, Latin, Russian, French, Vietnamese, Italian, Marathi, Portuguese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Japanese, Thai, Eastern Armenian, Western Armenian and Sanskrit. The library grows one edition at a time.

Why learn a language at all, when AI can translate?

Because a translation tells you what someone said; it does not make you someone who understood. Two essays make the case, one of them with every study it rests on.
Why learn a language when AI can translate everything? ›If you want to keep your brain young, give it something hard to do. ›

Is Kanboombo affiliated with Duolingo?

No. Duolingo is a trademark of Duolingo, Inc. Kanboombo is not affiliated with Duolingo. What this page says about Duolingo comes from Duolingo’s own pages, each one linked and dated.
